Volunteer opportunities

Research shows that helping others increases feelings of happiness and well-being. Volunteering with local school children (by Zoom) is a great way to stay connected and engaged while in quarantine / isolation, while giving yourself a mental health boost.

Big Red Cares Program

Bright Horizons – a daycare center and preschool at Cornell serving infants to 5-year-olds – is looking for student volunteers to engage with their students by Zoom. This can include reading to children, sharing music and singing with the infants/toddlers, showing older children some dance moves or art projects, or talking about science and technology. The best times to assist teachers are between 9:00 & 11:00 am and between 3:00 & 4:00 pm, but there may be some flexibility.

If you would like to explore this opportunity, please contact Yasmin Kassam, Health and Safety Director at Cornell Child Care Center, at yasmin.kassam@brighthorizons.com

Literature Lunches

“Literature Lunches” at Lansing Elementary School invites guest readers to share multicultural readings and books with a focus on mental health. Volunteers are asked to record themselves reading and send the video to the school.

If you are interested in participating in this program, please contact Laura Larkin, the Dean of Students at Lansing Elementary School, at 607-533-3020, ext. 1122. Laura also has a list of books she can recommend.
