Professional interests:
Simao applies data analytics, statistical modeling, and interdisciplinary research methods to understand factors that influence health, well-being, and educational outcomes across the life course. His research examines risk factors (e.g., BMI, peer victimization) and protective factors (e.g., school belonging, social support, and physical activity) associated with mental health outcomes, including depressive symptoms, depressive disorders, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
Grounded in the Ecological Systems Framework as an overarching background, his work integrates perspectives from stress process theory, social support theory, and the interpersonal theory of suicide to better understand how individual, family, school, and community contexts shape health and developmental outcomes.
His professional interests include mental health, health equity, developmental science, educational research, program evaluation, and the application of data to improve student well-being and institutional effectiveness.
